Definition provided by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.

The following principles are the foundation of naturopathic medical practice:

  • The Healing Power of Nature: Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

  • Identify and Treat the Causes: The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

  • First Do No Harm: Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:

    • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;

    • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and

    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.

  • Doctor as Teacher: Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

  • Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.

  • Prevention: Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Naturopathic practice includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy), public health measures, hygiene, counseling, minor surgery, homeopathy, acupuncture, prescription medication, intravenous and injection therapy, and naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth).

Dr. Ferreira's primary service is naturopathic medicine – a comprehensive system that offers the best of both worlds by combining traditional Western Medicine and natural methods to fit your individual needs (nutrition, herbs, homeopathy, ect).  She also blends Eastern Medicine as is it an additional system that is inclusive of a holistic approach.  Acupuncture is just one therapy that is part of this system, Traditional Chinese Medicine, but highly utilized in Western Medicine due to its effectiveness.  Unlike most doctor's visits, Dr. Ferreira's first initial visit can take from 45-60 minutes to get a full understanding of your health concerns - that is 2-3x longer than the typical doctor.  This allows her to get to know you, understand your concerns, and to partner with you in reaching your unique health and wellness goals. This ongoing relationship is what allows her to help you lead your best, most vibrant life – at every stage.

You should plan for your initial visit to take 45-60 minutes as it is a thorough history.  At the first follow up visit, which takes 30 minutes, Dr. Ferreira analyzes labs asked for at the initial visit and completes their interpration with your medical history and chief concerns.  This allows her to make an individualized treatment plan to address your health concerns.  It entails a holistic perspective, and usually natural measures to address your concerns with any prescription medications if indicated.  Follow up visits thereafter are for revisiting problems that have already been addressed, adjusting treatment plans, or looking deeper into your concerns.
